The Red Poppy Festival
Georgetown proudly holds the title of "Red Poppy Capital of Texas," a nod to the vibrant red poppies that blanket the city each spring. The tradition began after a Georgetown World War I soldier brought poppy seeds home from Europe. His mother planted them at her house on 7th Street in Old Town, and over the years the flowers naturally reseeded and spread throughout the community.
Although red poppies aren't native to Texas, Georgetown is one of the few places in the U.S. where they self-seed year after year. Each spring, the city celebrates with the Red Poppy Festival — live music, artisan vendors, local food, family activities, and fields of iconic red blooms.
